Visitor Catering - Supporting the Attraction

It's the small details that go a long way to support the overall visitor attraction and catering has the ability to play its part. The below train biscuits - a simple yet effective example at York's National Railway Museum visitor restaurant.

Hole-in-the-wall pub food

Hundred Crows Rising, Islington - it's such a great pub, we are not sure who wouldn't want to venture inside! But if for some reason you can't or are not allowed, they have a great hole-in-the wall menu.

Caravan Brunch, Kings Cross

Caravan, Exmouth Market, has been a firm favourite of ours for a long time. However, the Kings Cross addition is a great alternative if you happen to be over here and is especially good for brunch.

Cathedral Visitor Catering

If your cathedral has a refectory, cafe or other visitor catering do you really know who your customers are and more importantly, what they want to eat and drink?

Findings recently published in Attractions Management identified that 6.7 million international tourists visited churches or cathedrals in 2011. In total, 22% of last year's 31m visitors went to a religious site. According to the information, a religious site is most popular among Brazilians (55%) followed by Australians and Americans (49%) and Russian and Chinese (45%).

'So what!' you may be saying. However, have you thought about how your visitor cafe or refectory meets the food and beverage needs of these visitors from different countries and cultures? Cream teas and other favourites are bound to be popular, to some extent, but how appealing and relevant is the rest of your menu?

Rhodes, Greenwich

Rhodes in Greenwich has all the usual elements you would expect from a bakery such as their well placed oven, combined with a contemporary style and great products. They also have a few stools in the window which are great for enjoying their coffee from while watching the outside buzz of Greenwich!

Note the 'stack' of hot cross buns in front of the oven..
