Food & Sport

It’s an Olympic sport but could you play ping-pong and eat pizza? Ping is a new underground bar, serving pizzas and drinks but with the added bonus that you can also play ping-pong. Of course, you don’t have to play and eat!

The overall décor is very New York and they hold tournaments with cash prizes.

While it has all the familiar formats associated with successful bars it is also doing something a little different too.

Catering Trends - Miniaturisation

Catering Trends  - Miniaturisation

Miniaturisation of both savoury and sweet menu items has been around for a while now and seems to be becoming ever more popular.  For customers requiring just a light bite or a small sweet treat it is a great way of increasing sales. As well as the additional sales in realises, customer quite often will pay a premium price for miniature items in relation to the equivalent same item in a larger size – improving margins as well as additional sales. Worth considering if you are looking to optimise the potential from your museum, gallery, theatre, employee or university catering?

Below mini cake bites from Costa.

Knife + Fork = Chopsticks

As many will know, a fork and spoon combination is a ‘spork’. However, now you can have a knife and fork that combines into chopsticks. If you are running a café, restaurant, workplace catering or visitor catering that has a menu that lends itself to the use of both chopsticks and knives and forks, this could be of interest.

The Calf – Westfield

The Calf – Westfield

The Calf, a pop-up bar in Westfield, is an off-spring of The Cow pub just around the corner. Styled with a ‘ski chalet’ feel, The Calf is initially around for six months.

While their chalkboard door doesn’t overly promote their food and drink directly, it is certainly eye catching and supports the fun atmosphere that The Calf has created just moments from the Olympic Park.

Catering and bar marketing and point of sale material doesn’t need to be expensive. It is often the simpler and more innovative ideas that are the ones that work.

Gambling your catering profits?

Lucky Days in York is a café selling the usual sandwiches, cakes etc. The difference here is that when you make your purchases you roll the dice and if you roll a six, all items purchased are £1 each. The interesting angle to this is that the produce is all quality.

We’ll be checking back soon to see how they’re doing and if the gamble has paid off!
